Deconstructing the myths of onboarding
We’re big on employee onboarding – the engagement, the compliance, and most of all, the opportunity to wow new hires. Since we live and breathe onboarding technology every day, we thought we’d take a good look at the onboarding myths we regularly hear….kind of like the ever-entertaining MythBusters show.
This is part 1 of 7. Don’t miss any of the fascinating series!
Myth #1: Paper-based onboarding is sufficient today
One of our clients came to us with an onboarding program that consisted of an 18-inch stack of paper. Another came with an onboarding packet of 137 pages. It took hours for their new hires to plod through the stacks of paperwork.
Both clients were frustrated with how inefficient, error-prone, and unengaging their process was, mostly due to the standard answer, ‘this is how we have always done it’. Instead of welcoming their new hires with a warm and effective onboarding process, their paper-based process took ages and made for a poor first impression.
Well, things have changed. Making the switch to onboarding software enabled them to digitize and automate the process. By leveraging the Click Boarding platform, they were able to increase efficiency, decrease errors, and improve their new hire experience.
Increased Efficiency
Delta Dental was able to decrease the amount of time new hires spent on onboarding paperwork from 3 hours to 20 minutes – an 89% reduction! In addition, their HR team saved ~45 hours per week on onboarding paperwork, enabling them to focus on their mission of improving the employee experience. Read the full case study here.
Decreased Errors
Their former processes relied on their HR team accurately reading hand-written employee information and rekeying it into their HRIS system. Making the switch to onboarding software eliminated this step, as new hires could directly type their information into the platform. This also ensured that new hire personal information was securely stored in a centralized repository that is SOC 2 Type 2 and GDPR compliant.
Improved New Hire Experience
Their paper-based onboarding process did little, if anything, to affirm a new hire’s ‘YES’ to joining the company, one of the most important parts of onboarding. After the time and expense of securing a new candidate, the last thing they wanted was to make them second guess their decision to join the company.
Delta Dental used to feel like candidates fell into a black hole between when they signed the offer letter and their first day. Some new hires heard from their hiring managers, but others didn’t hear a peep until their first day. The Click Boarding platform enabled them to create customized onboarding workflows for each role and location, which are automatically triggered the moment a new hire accepts an offer, making sure each candidate feels welcome and engaged.
