How the best HR people think like Dr. Seuss

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ 113th birthday, I’ve chosen to honor this man who helped me learn how to read and enjoy laughing out loud – and now with my daughter –  with a little blog. It is said over 60 books were written by Dr. Seuss, and from those I’ve chosen top life-lesson quotes – and low and behold they remind me of my HR friends. Here’s why…

The following Dr. Seuss quotes remind me of how HR treats candidates, new hires, and employees. HR works hard to attract, recruit, and onboard talent, demonstrating to those newly recruited and hired, just how highly valued they are.

“To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.” – The Lorax

“A person’s a person, no matter how small.” – Horton Hears a Who

Every new hire is different, and no one knows this better than HR. HR ensures that during the hiring and onboarding process, the new hire receives information specific to him/her and the new position. The more relevant the content is to the new hire, the more acclimated they can become even before their first day on the job, and be productive from the very start.

“Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!” – Happy Birthday to You!

If companies were to have cheerleaders, HR would nail the try outs. HR most successfully ensures that every new hire feels confident and excited about the organization, the team, the brand – even before their first day on the job. These Dr. Seuss quotes remind me of what HR brings to new hire onboarding and beyond:

“You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so… get on your way!” ― The Places You’ll Go!

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”- Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

HR strives to figure out and deliver an awesome experience for new hires and employees. When new hires have an easy onboarding experience, that increases the likelihood that they will not only like the brand and stay with the company longer, but increases the likelihood of becoming a brand advocate and long-term buyer.

“Look at me! Look at me now! It is fun to have fun, but you have to know how.” – The Cat in the Hat

Lastly, HR is always looking out for the new hire, and in so doing, pursues better ways to attract, recruit, hire, and onboard them. I believe these Dr. Seuss quotes capture HR’s efforts well:

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!”- Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – The Lorax

What will you be doing to honor Dr. Seuss on his birthday? I will be helping my daughter transform herself to the Dr. Seuss character Daisy-Head Mayzie – hopefully easier than last year’s Cindy Lou-Who.
