An intimate conversation on employee retention & turnover
After months of anticipation, Click Boarding was thrilled to participate in our fourth Masterclassing session, held on Thursday, May 27th, 2021. This intimate, online event brought together senior HR professionals from leading brands to discuss employee engagement and retention today. Danielle Balow, Associate Director of Click’s Consulting Practice, lead a quick-fire thought leadership session on the impact of retention amidst a challenging and complex employee/employer dynamic.
At the completion of each presentation, Team Click facilitated insightful conversations with three breakout groups of innovative HR leaders. We jotted down some of our favorite contributions in regards to impacting retention:
- Each individual has a personal responsibility to ensure that their team members stay. As such, employee retention is everyone’s responsibility.
- Retaining talent takes tools and technology, but it also takes time and true intent. People leaders need to build out their soft skills to create time & space for development conversations.
- Retention starts with onboarding but must continue throughout the life of the employee. Focus on development and training to support lateral moves, opening employees’ eyes to a long-term career within the organization.
- Ask for feedback, early and often. Once received, ensure you share engagement survey data with managers. Year one is critical!
Following these thought-provoking discussions, the full group came together to hear a keynote presentation from Sunwing Travel Group’s Director of Global Talent Development, Deon Blyan. Deon spoke to his team’s new concierge program for onboarding. As you can imagine, all of us Clicksters in attendance gave Deon mad props! We documented one of his many profound quotes from the event:
“Leaders are the linchpins in the engagement equation, and equipped leaders find the engagement opportunities when they act with quality and authenticity.”
Your people leaders may have the best intentions to engage and retain their employees, but without proper tools, they’ll likely fall short. The truth of the matter is that your assets are at risk. And given the detrimental impact of employee turnover tied to loss in productivity, resource allocation and hard dollars, attrition is more important than ever.
